21 Questions About Uruguay

Answers to your most burning questions about South America's most granola capital city.

Last weekend I took a trip to Uruguay! In this edition of Lucas’ Blog, I answer your 21 most burning questions about South America’s most granola capital city.

1. How do I get to Uruguay?

The ferry from Buenos Aires to Uruguay takes about an hour. Just make sure to arrive with plenty of time or you’ve got a long, long swim.

2. What’s there to do in Uruguay?

Not much! The most popular cities are Colonia, a colonial (shocker) beach town and the capital, Montevideo. It’s a great destination to renew your Argentinian tourist visa, withdraw cash in USD, and nurse your homesickness—the prices for food and lodging will throw you right back to the States.

3. What are the dogs like?

As laid-back as the people!

4. Everyone in my group forgot sunscreen, where can I pick some up?

A small bottle of sunscreen in Colonia runs you $20 USD. If you don’t want to have to choose between going broke and looking like a tomato, don’t forget sunscreen.

5. Do you miss the Santa Barbara sunsets?

Only a little less!

6. My free trial for Uruguay ended on the 15th, but Migrations charged my card for a yearlong subscription without notifying me. Where can I get a refund?

For help setting up your Uruguay, press 1. For Paraguay, press 2. To add a new member, press 3. For crackly jazz flute, press 4.

7. What are Uruguayans like?

Just like Argentinians, but granola. Half of Montevideo journals on the beach at sunset, they drink superhuman quantities of mate out of foot-long straws, and were the first country in the world to legalize recreational cannabis.

8. What is Uruguay’s largest export?

In 2022 the small-but-mighty nation exported 18 million tons of Urugium, making it the world’s second-largest supplier of the rich mineral used to produce Electric Guays.

9. What’s the best club in Montevideo?

If you’re looking for night life in this capital city, your best bet is to turn around and go back to Buenos Aires.

10. Is Uruguay the same as Paraguay?

Don’t fall for this common swindler’s trick! Uruguay and Paraguay were once one nation, united under the Guay the Great. In 1847, the patriarch’s death threw the region into Civil Guar between his two sons, Para and Ura. Fortunately, Brazil oversaw a peaceful resolution between the countries, who today are only rivals on the futbol field.

11. That last one felt like a stretch, are you running out of questions?

Ah geez, I knew 21 was ambitious.

12. You hit twelve, think we should call it?

Yeah, I think people know everything they need to about the place. Happy Uruguaying!

Until next time,

Lucas
